SUMMARY:BOOK LAUNCH A Brilliant Void\, edited and introduced by Jack Fennell
DESCRIPTION:For all you sci-fi fans! \nAn astronomer challenges an emperor. A hunter pursues the last dinosaur through a remote rainforest. A young Kerryman emigrates to the Moon to seek his fortune. \nWe’re so delighted to be presenting our third and final title for 2018\, A Brilliant Void: A Selection of Classic Irish Science Fiction. \n\n\n\n\nThese fifteen darkly funny stories illuminate a side of Irish literary history that is often overlooked. In the 19th and 20th centuries\, the winds of change came rushing in Ireland’s direction. Science and technology would transform everything: life\, love\, death\, crime\, war\, and even history itself. \nEdited and introduced by Jack Fennell\, this collection of lesser-known works of classic Irish science fiction includes stories by Frances Power Cobbe\, Fitz-James O’Brien\, Charlotte McManus and Cathal Ó Sándair. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJACK FENNELL is a writer\, editor\, translator and researcher whose academic publications include pieces on science fiction\, utopian and dystopian literature\, monsters\, Irish literature\, and the legal philosophy of comic books. He is the author of Irish Science Fiction (2014)\, a contributing translator for The Short Fiction of Flann O’Brien (2013)\, and a former Visiting Fellow at the Moore Institute in NUI Galway. He lives in Limerick. \n\nThe launch will be at 6.30pm – 7.30pm in the Gutter BookShop on Saturday 17 November\, as part of the Dublin Book Festival. The event is totally free\, and everybody’s welcome. \n\nThere will be more Brilliant Void features and events in November and December\, check back here and on our social media channels for more information.

SUMMARY:Waterford Writers Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a panel on ‘How not to Approach Publishers’. We’ll talk about preparing your manuscript to send to publishers and agents\, and well talk in detail about the avoidable pitfalls that many authors fall into. Bring your questions and we’ll do our best to tell you everything you need to know about the man behind the green curtain. \nWe’ll be encouraging questions from the audience. If you want to come say hi afterwards\, we’re going to be heading straight over to the ‘First Timers’ panel but we’ll hang around after that (around 3pm or so)\, if you want to talk in confidence. \nThis event is free! See you there

SUMMARY:Mike McCormack workshop at Dalkey Creates
DESCRIPTION:Join Mike McCormack at the Dalkey Creates festival for a day-long writing workshop. From the Dalkey Creates website: \nAbout This Course\nAll stories belong to people or\, as we say in fiction writing\, characters. But how do we find and develop these characters? How do we enable them to take on a credible life of their own so that the reader will want to spend time and empathise with them? What kind of story arc enables a character to best develop as a living\, breathing presence? How do these characters change and grow across the length and breadth of a novel or a short story? And when it comes to the end\, how do we recognise it as the end\, how do we know that a story is over?\n\nThese are some of the issues which will be explored in this workshop. Reading and writing exercises will delve into how we can bring our characters to life and deepen their stories. A range of compositional experiments will be attempted and revision techniques will be explored. Participants will come away with an enhanced range of ideas and experimental techniques that will further their own writing projects.\n \nWho is this course suitable for?\nThose who have started writing\, and those who have maybe paused for a while and are looking for a way back in. \nCheck out the Dalkey Creates Festival website for booking information.
